Red Carpet Hairstyles from The Oscars 2014

Always keen at Fordham Hair Design to see what trends come out of Tinseltown during the awards season we weren't let down by the hair styles at the 2014 Oscars. Vintage waves dominated the red carpet with hair left loose but 'up styles' weren't far behind to show us that glamour has many faces.

Best Actress Cate Blanchett

Without a doubt the strongest trend at the Oscars this year was the vintage wave, seen here on 'Best Actress' Winner Cate Blanchett, this style is reminiscent of the golden era of Hollywood and was seen on actresses such as Veronica Lake and Lauren Bacall. A beautifully elegant style that is achieved by curling the hair on heated tongs such as a traditional Marcel Wave iron. Once curled the the hair is smoothed using a bristle brush to coax it into soft tumbling waves.

The glittering night saw this look worn to the side accentuating the waved form, if any style deserves the description of being 'Very Hollywood' then we think this is it!

The waved look was also worn in a more casual way, instead of the smooth wave the look here was to create more texture and give the hair a more beach waved feel, contrasting beautifully with a glittering gown. Seen on Kerry Washington and Jennifer Garner.

Those with shorter hair were left in no doubt that texture was the way forward.  Jennifer Lawrence's short style was accentuated with natural highlights and styled with a tousled wave echoed by Grande Dame Bette Midler. But the vintage look wasn't far behind when Viola Davis wowed us with her strong finger waved hairstyle, very reminiscent of the period dramas and films that have dominated the small and large screen alike in recent years.

For those looking to the red carpet for hair up inspiration we weren't left disappointed with this years looks.
Casual up styles were hot on the red carpet with actress Julia Roberts leading the way, softly pinned into the nape of the neck and with soft tendrils left loose around the hairline to keep the feminine feel.

Olivia Wilde also went with the soft up do as her chosen 2014 Oscars hair style and again the soft tendrils around the front hairline kept the look soft and romantic.

Braids were also evident on the red carpet and incorporated into up styles as seen here on Maria Menounos. This is a hot look in the world of bridal hairstyling, certainly over the last few years we have seen this look become more popular. The secret with this style is to make sure that the braid isn't done to tightly and to leave wisps around the hairline to soften the entire look.

Whilst the majority of styles were very soft and romantic we were left in no doubt that the formal up do could be tres chic when seen on Penelope Cruz and pop-star extraordinaire Lady Gaga. This is a bold look that insists on meticulous styling to ensure that every wisp of hair is tamed into place. Not for everyone this look but without doubt a style that turns heads.
